Trauma counselling in Fredericton, New Brunswick
The Deep Woods : you don’t have to carry it alone
Trauma takes many shapes. A single terrifying event, or many over time. A childhood where you never really felt safe. An assault, an accident, a loss, a diagnosis you’re still absorbing. Years of difficult calls or shifts, one after another with no time to recover in between.
Afterward, you might notice that your sleep is off, your fuse is short, or your body reacts before your mind can catch up. None of that means something is wrong with you. Those responses show a story of survival and resilience. They kept you going when times were unpredictable but they may no serve you today. Therapy can help you set down what you no longer need to carry.
I’m Jessica Maclean, MACP, LCT-C, CCC, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, Level 2 (CCTP-II) and former paramedic. I offer trauma counselling for adults in person in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and by secure video. We start by helping you feel steadier, and only when you’re ready do we work through the memories that still weigh on you. Some of the approaches I utilize for trauma are Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).
What trauma care looks like here
The trailhead - First session
First, we’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, what your life has held, and what you’d like to change. Then we gently explore how the past is showing up in your life today: in your sleep, your body, your moods, or your relationships. We will also look at a few short questionnaires, which give us a clear starting point so we can see your progress along the way. ($160/50-minute session)
Groundwork Sessions
Before we turn toward the past, we work on building steadiness in the present. We’ll work on practical skills to settle your nervous system, so you have tools that work in your everyday life, not just in my office. I draw from several well-researched approaches, and I tailor the skills to what fits your way of thinking and what you’re experiencing. ($160/50-minute session)
Looking To the Past
Once you feel steady, we choose which well-researched therapy to use together.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) uses gentle, guided eye movements to help process past memories. You don’t have to describe every detail out loud, and many memories can be worked through in one to two sessions. ($230/90-minute session)
Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) works on your whole life story in order, for people who have lived through many hard events. The process takes 12-15 sessions, and helps to contextualize traumatic memories in the past and a written testimony of your life is built to help reclaim perspective in the present. ($230/ 90-minute session)
Turning towards the future
In our final phase, we pull together what you’ve worked through and make sense of the changes. We talk about how you’d like the road ahead to look, and how to build the resilience and additional skills that will carry you there. We will also build a practical plan around potential difficult times in the future, what natural processing looks like and when to seek a little extra help. ($160/ 50-minute sessions)
