Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) in New Brunswick
The Deep Woods: putting your story in order
I offer Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) in person in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and by secure video, for adults who have lived through many hard events. NET usually takes 12 to 15 sessions (90 minutes/session), and at the end you receive a written copy of your story, called your Testimony.
Sessions 1-2: Our focus is on assessment and stabilization so you feel safe through the steps.
Session 3: The lifeline exercise where we map out your life from birth to today using stones, flowers, candles, and sticks to represent events.
Sessions 4+: We begin the core phase of Chronological Narrative Exposure where your narrative is explored and documented as Testimony.
Ending Sessions: We will review your written Testimony of Survival and work to integrate the work we have completed with a focus on your future path.
During NET we map your life and revisit hard memories while exploring the sensory information it holds, linking the memory into its time and place in the past.
How NET works
Together, we lay out a timeline of your whole life, from the beginning to today. We mark the storms, the good moments, and the strength that carried you through. Then, one session at a time, we walk through the hardest events in the order they happened, slowly enough that your body can stay with them. As each memory finds its place in the larger story it can lose its grip on your present.
After each session, I write up a narrative of the memory we worked on and read it back to you. At the end of your NET journey, you receive your written narratives which act as your Testimony: your story in your words, including the profound resilience that has gotten you here.
NET is not the same as narrative or exposure therapy
NET is its own structured method, with its own training. It borrows aspects from narrative therapy and from exposure therapy, but it combines them into a clear plan with a beginning, a middle, and an end.
Questions about NET
-
We do walk through the hardest events, but always at a pace you set, and only after we’ve built steadiness first. You can pause or slow down at any point.
-
NET works through your whole life story in order. Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) focuses on specific memories, one at a time. We’ll choose together based on what you’re carrying.
-
Yes. NET has been studied for over two decades, especially with people who have lived through many traumatic events.
-
No. You do not need a referral to participate in NET. We can discuss and book next sessions during our initial intake session.
Not sure if NET is the right path?
That is completely valid. Book a free 15-minute call and we can discuss your needs and goals.
Is NET right for you?
NET was built for people whose hard experiences didn’t come one at a time. Maybe it’s years of difficult calls. Maybe it’s a childhood that never felt safe. When memories pile up like that, they can blur together and keep showing themselves in the present: in your sleep, your body, your temper. NET helps put them back in the past and in order.
