Welcome to the clearing
Life after trauma, burnout, or navigating a neurotypical world with a neurodivergent mind can feel a little like being lost in the woods. You are still putting one foot in front of the other, but you may not know where the trail markers went or exactly when you passed the last one. Backtracking sounds exhausting, and forging ahead blindly may lead you somewhere you didn’t intend to go.
I created The Birches Collective Wellness to serve as a trail guide for those looking to navigate out of the dark woods and into the sunlight. Here, we don’t believe in brokenness or the need to be “fixed.” We believe that persevering through the challenges of your life is undeniable evidence of your profound resilience and strength.
Here in The Clearing, I will be sharing practical tools, nervous system regulation strategies, and field notes on how to move forward in a way that honours your unique wiring, goals, and proven resilience.
Today’s Field Note: Honouring the Armour
One of the most exhausting parts of carrying trauma is the belief that some of your symptoms, like hyper-vigilance or anxiety, mean that something is wrong with you.
I want to offer a gentle reframe: Your brain is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Your mind built brilliant, adaptive armour to help you survive a storm. Not all trauma responses are inherently “bad” they are the very mechanisms that kept you safe in times of profound need. Your nervous system isn’t broken; it simply adapted to danger.
The goal of trauma work shouldn’t be to shame the armour, or to judge your trauma responses, but to gently thank them. Honour the survival skills that protected you when you needed them most. Then, because you are on more steady ground, you can gently teach your brain that the storm has passed so you can lower the shield.
Whether you work with a clinician at The Birches Collective or find a qualified trauma therapist in your own local community, trauma work can include collaborating with a safe guide to determine when and if you still need to use those shields.
The journey through the woods can be dark but you do not have to walk it alone. Our doors are officially open.
Welcome to The Birches Collective Wellness.
